The Shoegazer Movement Gets A Documentary: Beautiful Noise

By: Spacelab Research Staff
It's been rattled around the Interweb that there's a new documentary in production on the genre of Shoegaze music. It's title Beautiful Noise, and is being created by Hypnagogia Films and is being directed by Eric Green.

By all initial accounts, there's an attempt here at a serious look at the movement, featuring 47 interviews of people from some of the main bands of the movement: My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Lush, Flying Saucer Attack, Ride, and many more, including artists that have sinced been influenced like Autolux and Asobi Seksu.

The Shoegazer genre was highly experimental and chaotic, while often trying to squeeze itself into a pop song-like format. The result was controlled chaos that always hovered close to the threshold of going out of control. Over time, the figurehead of the movement became My Bloody Valentine, who have seemed to provide the roadmap by which many others started to follow as they found their own way.

There's no official release date yet, but a recent interview in Pitchfork with Eric Green says that the director is optimistic about releasing the film this year.

"I've been on it for two and half years. When it seems we're getting closer and closer, things come up. But, we're getting close-- it could be a couple weeks, it could be a couple of months," Green said.
